Security Situation

Greetings from Haiti.

The Haitian government announced yesterday the two candidates for the run-off election scheduled for January 2011. This caused rioting due to the fact that people strongly feel that the system has been compromised. Many of our employees at our St. Damien Hospital, St. Philomena Hospital (cholera tent center), St. Luke and St. Germaine programs were not able to travel to work due to roads being blocked, tires burning and streets filled with protestors. Fr. Rick and his team worked their way through the city picking up hospital staff. A few international volunteers, who we partner with, sought refuge in our hospital compound. Life for the children at St. Anne, St. Louis and St. Helene, continued with normal daily activities safe inside their complexes. The airport is also temporarily closed.
